One of the best things about going on a one-way Alaskan cruise is that you can extend your vacation and explore the state’s interior by adding on a land tour. We call this an Alaskan “CruiseTour.”
When you book a cruise tour with Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line or Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, you can choose an itinerary that lets you stay a night or two at the Alyeska Resort. This amazing resort is located a few miles northeast of the town of Girdwood and offers visitors gorgeous scenery like the Chugach mountain range. While you’re there don’t miss the opportunity to experience the Four Diamond Seven Glaciers Restaurant with panoramic views just a short tram ride from the resort.
Tram ride with scenic views to 2,300 feet
At the resort, one activity that you should not miss out on is Alyeska Aerial Tram, which takes you from the bottom of The Hotel Alyeska to the top of Mount Alyeska. On your way up to 2,300 feet, you can see the Turnagain Arm, up to seven “hanging” glaciers and often bears and moose are spotted. Shop for locally made souvenirs like jade coasters, bookends and jewelry at Kobuk Valley Jade Company.
Activities for the more adventurous
Adventure seekers will get their adrenaline pumping taking a raft down Six Mile Creek. Colorful plants and trees, crystal clear water and Alaskan wildlife are part of what you’ll likely see when you and your guide hit the rapids. If whitewater is not for you, then take the relaxing ride on a Turnagain Pass Float Trip on spacious inner tubes.
During your cruise tour, you can also explore the beautiful town of Whittier, located just 25 miles from Alyeska Resort. While you’re there, kayak Prince William Sound. During this excursion, be on the lookout for halibut, salmon and bald eagles.
