It’s a fact– the price that you see for a cruise ship cabin is typically based on double occupancy. That means the price you are seeing is the cost of a cruise assuming that two people will be staying in a room and both will be paying the listed price. If you want to travel alone, and have your own room…you pay double. However, some cruise lines offer no or low single supplements for travelers, and our agents at CruiseExperts.com can help you find those opportunities. And expect to find the best deal if your travel dates and destination are flexible.
What is a “single supplement?”
A single supplement is a surcharge to recover revenue lost when a solo traveler occupies a room that could accommodate two guests.
Some of the cruise lines who accommodate solo travelers:
Norwegian Epic has 128 studio cabins priced for solo cruisers. While they are all inside cabins, you have access to an exclusive lounge for only solo cruisers. Special Amenities: Full-size bed, flat-screen TV and private bathroom. Although they are inside staterooms, they each have a window that looks out onto the corridor. Exclusive access to a shared social space called the Studio Lounge, with large-screen TV’s, coffee-making facilities and a bartender during certain hours.
Princess and Holland America have a limited number of solo cabins at a reduced supplement of 50%, but you must book early before they are gone. Holland America is renowned among the big ships for catering to solo guests. They also offer a Single Partner’s Program and will match you with a roommate of the same gender. You are guaranteed the double-occupancy rate even if a partner can not be found. Singles are invited to a meet and greet cocktail mixer, and on voyages longer than 30 days, gentleman hosts are available for dancing.
Cunard’s ships have attracted solo cruisers for a long time, due to its traditional ocean liners and the sociable onboard atmosphere. Solos can easily make friends with their shipmates on Cunard, and solos are generally placed at dining tables with other solo travelers. The typical solo supplement is 200 percent for Queens and Princess Suites, and 175 percent for inside, oceanview and balcony cabins. Occasionally they will offer discounts to solo cruisers.
Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara charge a full 100% single supplement, but when booking closer to the sail date you might be able to get a solo-friendly price.
Silversea Cruises doesn’t offer “single” cabins but occasionally a solo traveler can sail alone without a huge penalty. Average solo fares are 25 to 75 percent about the double-occupancy rate. Due to the smaller number of passengers, singles find it easier to feel at home. A cocktail reception onboard always draws a large number of solos, and male Social Ambassadors are available as dance partners and shore excursion escorts.
Viking River Cruises offer a limited number of reduced-supplement cabins for solo travelers.
