Film: “Big Miracle”
This movie was filmed in Barrow, Anchorage, and Seward, Alaska. Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski star in this movie as a former couple living in Alaska who work together to help free a family of grey whales. These gentle giants are in danger of becoming trapped under quickly forming ice. It’s a wonderful tale that shows what can happen when people set their differences aside and work toward a common goal.
Film: “Eskimo”
Filmed in 1933, this was the first American film made in Alaska and the first dramatic film with almost an entirely all-native cast.
Book (non-fiction): “Alaska (Regional Guide)” by Jim DuFresne, Robert Kelly and Catherine Bodry

Book (non-fiction): “The Thousand Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians” by Brian Garfield and Terrence Cole
An account of the battles fought in Alaska between the US and Japan during World War II. Despite the worst climate situations, this war was a turn in favor of the US.
Book: “Alaska Stories: Tales from the Last Frontier” – John Miller
This book includes the voices of native Alaskans, environmentalists, tourists, essayists and fiction writers and their take on Alaska. It’s a beautiful collection of true stories, fiction and essays that will give you an insight look into what life in the Last Frontier State is like.
Book (fiction): “Alaska: A Novel” by James A. Michener
Master storyteller Michener tells the tale of Alaska history to its present. The people who claimed the land on the edge of the world and how the community survived.
