Five Juneau restaurants that you must visit on your Alaskan cruise

Alaska is known for its scenic views, wildlife and outdoor activities that are suitable for people of various ages and activity levels. But have you considered what Alaska has to offer in the culinary realm?

When we think of great dining locations, New York City or California’s wine towns often come to mind, but the Land of the Midnight Sun shouldn’t be counted out. On your Alaskan cruise or cruisetour, it’s likely that you’ll make a stop in the state’s capital of Juneau. It has plenty to offer. People travel from all around the Unites States and the world to see the beauty of Alaska, so you don’t have to worry about Juneau having scarce dining options.

Here a few places that locals and visitors love:

Bullwinkle’s – Yes, this establishment is named after a fictional character, but there’s nothing silly about what this pizza joint has to offer. In its 40-year history, little has changed about Bullwinkle’s except for the pizza, as it seems to get better every time you visit. If you’re in the mood for something a bit different, the restaurant also has great sandwiches and an extensive salad bar. While you’re waiting for your meal to arrive, you can munch on free popcorn.

Tracy’s King Crab Shack – If you’re looking for a no frills restaurant where you can just chow down on some great seafood, Tracy’s is the place to go. You won’t even have to go far from your cruise ship to find a great meal. The row of food booths is wedged between the cruise ship dock and the library parking garage. Don’t let the location fool you about the food, though. Here, you’ll get the best crab bisque, rolls and cakes that you’ve ever eaten! If you’re with a large group, consider splitting a two pound bucket of king crab pieces.

Twisted Fish  – This restaurant takes Alaska’s fishing heritage very seriously. Almost every item on the menu has some sort of seafood. This isn’t surprising since it’s located next to one of Juneau’s busiest commercial wharves. Its inviting interior makes it a perfect location for both daytime and evening dining.

SALT Alaska – Formerly known as Zephyr, Salt is arguably one of Juneau’s best up-and-coming restaurants and certainly its most innovative. This Mediterranean-inspired restaurant incorporates fresh Alaskan Seafood into many of its dishes. It’s seafood stew, filled with smoked salmon, clams and prawns is one of its most-ordered items. Those looking for more classic dishes will be happy to see items like lemon-marinated lamb and grilled calamari on the menu. Salt also boasts an extensive wine list that could compete with any fine dining establishment in the Lower 48! The new owners of the restaurant also own Tracy’s, so expect to find some great crab dishes as well.

Hangar on the Wharf – The Hangar has been a local favorite since 1996 with outstanding customer service. Featuring a comfortable and friendly environment, you’re guaranteed a great meal. Located on Juneau’s waterfront, the view is spectacular. The old airplane hangar sits on pilings over the water with the best channel view Juneau has to offer.  The Pub features over 100 brands of beer, over 20 on tap and a full service bar with the friendliest bartenders in town.
