Cruise ship visitors to St. John’s, Newfoundland, often say that that the city reminds them of a slightly quirkier version of San Francisco (if that’s possible). The city has a great arts scene and a young population that keeps everything fresh. Something that you’ll find in St. John’s that you won’t in many other areas is a population of friendly locals willing to speak with visitors and newcomers.
If you find yourself chatting with one of these folks, they may give you a few suggestions for activities off of the beaten path. Here are a few that may come up:
Eat at The Reluctant Chef – Don’t let the name of this restaurant fool you, as it’s unlikely that you’ll dislike anything to find here. You’ll need to set aside three hours to get through an five-course menu that is carefully thought out and prepared by the chef. The menu changes often, so you’ll need to call ahead to find out what’s available.
Have a drink at Trapper John’s Museum & Pub – This is the place to kick back and hear some great live music. You can also become an Honorary Newfie at their Screech-In ceremony (get the details off of their website). So why is it called a museum? There are animal traps enshrined throughout the building.
Take the St. John’s Haunted Hike – St. John’s refers to itself as North America’s Oldest City (although this is debatable), so it should come as no surprise that it has a haunted history. On the hike, a shadowy figure named Reverend Thomas Wyckham Jarvis, Esq. will lead you through the “scariest” parts of the city with tales of headless captains and other ghosts. Departure is from Anglican Cathedral’s west entrance.
