Cruising along the Atlantic Coast? Check out the best hiking trails in Acadia National Park

During a cruise along the Atlantic coast, a stop in Bar Harbor, Maine, presents the first opportunity for passengers to engage in some outdoor physical activity outside of the cruise ship. Bar Harbor is home to Acadia National Park, the oldest national park east of the Mississippi River.  Acadia is a great representative of the lush, but rugged terrain that is found in most undeveloped areas along the east coast.

Acadia is well known for its large number of hiking trails that range from well-manicured loops to steep, exposed cliffs. There is something for everyone of all skill levels. Here are our suggestions:

Gorham Mountain and Sand Beach

On this trail, you’ll start along the shore of Newport Cove and head up Gorham Mountain. You’ll have gorgeous views of the ocean the entire way up. When you come down the north side of the mountain, you will find Sand Beach. As its name suggests, Sand Beach does not have the rocky shore that you will find on most of the coast in this part of Maine. You and your family can spend some time splashing and relaxing.

Precipice Trail

Precipice is one of the shortest trails in the park (1.8 miles), but also one of the most challenging. The trail is less of a hike and more similar to a non-technical climbing route. To reach the top, you will need to scale some sections of rock wall. There are ladders and metal rungs for assistance, but this trail is not for hiking novices.

South Bubble Mountain and the Jordan Pond Loop

The “Bubbles” are two mountains that stand side-by-side and from a distance seem to have smooth, rounded peaks. The South Bubble trail is a family-friendly route that can be easily ascended.

Once you come back down, you’ll find yourself at the north end of Jordan Pond. Unfortunately, you can’t swim here, as it is a public water source, but be sure to stop by the Jordan Pond House for popovers and ice cream!
