Canada cruises: Eastern versus Western coast

In the United States, traveling to the East and West coasts are like visiting two separate worlds in many ways. The weather, people, and entertainment vary depending on which part of the country you are visiting. This difference is even more profound when visiting our friends to the north in Canada.

With Canada cruise season just around the corner it’s important to decide which ports of Canada are perfect for you!

Eastern Canada/New England (Atlantic coast): Want that feeling of being in Europe but not have to travel that far? Taking a cruise to the Eastern provinces of Canada is a perfect alternative for those who are craving a little French rendezvous. Eastern Canada cruise ports will typically include provinces such as Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and of course Canada’s largest province Quebec.

The Eastern provinces of Canada are the most culturally influenced by the French. In fact, in the Quebec province French is the language of choice. Not to worry though, most Quebecers are fluent in English as well, or can at least understand it.  Besides just speaking French, the eastern province have a plethora of beautiful little side walk cafes, high end fashion stores, and French style galleries.

Even though cruising season for Canada starts in May it can still be a bit chilly. However, Eastern Canada is well-known for its amazing fall foliage which is beautiful in September.  The warmest months for travel to Eastern Canada are June, July, and August, when the high temperature is usually in the mid 70’s.  So even in the summer, you’ll need a light jacket for the cool evenings.

Western Canada/British Columbia (Pacific coast): The Western side of Canada is perfect for nature lovers and those who revel in the natural beauty this world has to offer. The British Columbia coastline is known for having some of the greatest fjords in the world, a beautiful rugged mountain line, a magnificent rain-forest, and lots of open spaces.

Victoria and Vancouver are two of the most popular port stops on the western side of Canada. Both cities have an air of elegance about them with their British style and sophisticated colonial heritage. Having a cup of tea in the afternoon is a common occurrence. Vancouver is well-known for its vast array of activities offered. Lots of visitors enjoy outdoor excursions in this town such as windsurfing, scuba diving, and skiing. In Victoria many guests spend the day touring the beautiful parliament buildings or the Empress Hotel. The buildings in Victoria are just flooded with British style architecture which in my opinion is absolutely gorgeous.

During cruise season expect the weather to be between the mid 60’s to low 70’s for the highs. The summers are usually dry and sunny but I would advise bringing warm clothing just in case.’
