Retirement Living on a Cruise Ship
Living on a Cruise Ship is an Affordable and Amazing Retirement Option
It’s not just a rumor – more and more people are moving on board cruise ships as a cost effective way to a paradise retirement plan! I personally couldn’t think of a better way to retire than living on a cruise ship! Retirees are finding out that spending their retirement cruising around the world is more conceivable than they had imagined.
According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2010; the average cost in the United States for a semi private room in a nursing home was $6,235 a month or $205 per day and I can only imagine that cost has gone up significantly in the last six years. Independent living facilities aren’t far off from that, ranging anywhere between $2,000 and $8,000 a month, depending on the amenities. I don’t know about you, but if I am spending that much money on a retirement budget, I want to get the best bang for my buck, perhaps that’s why retirement living on a cruise ship has been gaining so much popularity in the last few years!
As long as you are in good health, retirement living on a cruise ship is completely possible; and the costs in many cases are much less than nursing homes or independent-living communities. There are also several options available depending on your budget and your needs. You could embark on world cruises, which typically range anywhere from $125 a day to $400 a day; essentially paying what you would be paying for a nursing facility while getting to travel the world. You could also look for cheaper rates and switch things up every few weeks. For instance, you can find several 2 week cruises for less than $50 a day.
This is significantly cheaper than what some people pay a month for their mortgage alone, not to mention all of the bills! If you don’t want the hassle of having to pack, unpack, and switch vessels, most cruise lines offer long term living on a cruise ship at a discount as well.
The best part about all of this is the treatment! You will have a full staff waiting on you at all times, delicious meals prepared for you anytime your tummy rumbles, and someone to tidy your room when you see fit. All of this is included, not to mention you get tons free entertainment onboard! There are a few things you may have to pay extra for, like alcohol and spa treatments, but with the money you could save you may choose to indulge a bit from time to time when you live on a cruise ship.
If I didn’t have to work to pay for my retirement, I would be setting sail NOW and saving myself thousands of dollars a year! In fact, my husband and I have talked about it and this is how we plan to retire when our time comes. We would probably choose to spend half the year on a world cruise and the other half on shorter cruises; this would give us the perfect opportunity to stop in and visit our family and friends for a few days before setting sail again. We’ve done the math and using this option it would probably cost us less than $3,000 a month. It’s seriously the most economical and exciting retirement option we’ve found.
