Cruises from San Diego 101
There are so many reasons to want to sail out of San Diego; the beaches, food, history, culture, weather, people, and let’s not forget the sheer beauty of this amazing town! As you can probably already tell by the introduction San Diego is by far one of the best places I have ever been. So, taking Cruises from San Diego is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to begin a fabulous cruise vacation!
Which Cruise Lines Cruise from San Diego? There are only a handful of cruise lines that have embarkation ports out of San Diego, the most popular being Holland America, Disney, Norwegian, and Celebrity. Of course, you can find other cruise lines that will dock in San Diego for the day as part of their itinerary, or smaller luxury lines such as, Crystal and Azamara, that will port out of San Diego a few times a year. But, for the most part if you are looking for a cruise from San Diego Holland, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Disney are going to be your major cruise lines.
What Destinations are offered on a San Diego Cruise? Depending on where your embarkation port city is will usually determine what part of the world you will be visiting. For instance, if you are taking a cruise out of Miami you will probably be headed to the Caribbean. Same goes for San Diego, the most popular itineraries include Hawaii, Mexico, South America, California Coastal, and my personal favorite Transcanal/Panama.
That doesn’t mean you can’t visit a Caribbean or Bahama island if you take a Cruise from San Diego. There are full transits through the Panama Canal from San Diego that will take you to the Atlantic Ocean. Essentially, a full transit means starting from the Pacific Ocean, through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean Sea and ending up in the Atlantic Ocean. Most of these cruises from San Diego are between 10-14 days.
World and exotic cruises are also offered out of San Diego, most of these you will find aboard Holland America. These cruises are wide open for where your port stops will be; you could head through the Hawaiian Islands to Australia or Mexico to South America. Of course, they will both include several stops along the way to fabulous destinations like Bora Bora or Polynesia.
If you are strapped for time you can find Cruises from San Diego that are 5 days or less. Most of these are aboard Disney or Holland America. The cruises aboard Holland America will usually take you to Vancouver, while the ones aboard Disney will take you to both Vancouver and Ensenada. Speaking of Disney Cruise Line, another fun fact about San Diego Cruises is that San Diego is the only port on the West Coast for Disney fanatics!
