Explore England on a Southampton Cruise
A Southampton Cruise is the perfect place to begin your European cruise getaway! Located in on the south coast of England this quaint European town is a home port town for several cruise lines, allowing you plenty of itinerary options on cruises from Southampton. Located only 75 miles from London, Southampton makes the perfect cruise port to embark from if you want to extend your cruise and venture inland. But, before you depart this magnificent jewel of a city, make sure to explore some of what Southampton has to offer!
The Tudor House: Located in Old Town this historical building has an extensive collection of fascinating artifacts. A must see at the Tudor House is the Southampton Book of Hours, a personal prayer book dating back to around 1480. Although too fragile to be put on permanent display the Tudor House features this amazing artifact on an interactive video display. Other featured pieces on display include a Penny Farthing bike, a Sedan Chair once used to transport wealthy people throughout the city, and an array of beautiful glass pains. While visiting this amazing historical building don’t forget to check out the café. It’s the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the Tudor Garden.
Southampton Town Walls: While in Southampton don’t miss out on an opportunity to walk along these medieval town walls. I would recommend getting a guided tour, as the local guides have a wealth of knowledge about the history surrounding these walls and the city. If you get lucky maybe your tour guide will show you the hidden vaults! Although recommended, it is not necessary to have a guided tour through the walls. There are plaques around the walls that will give insight into the history. There are also brochures you can pick up that have detailed information.
The Bargate: Built over 800 years ago the Bargate is one of Southampton’s oldest monuments. This amazing medieval structure was once Southampton’s guildhall but was transformed into a prison in the 1800’s. This ancient building has some of the most intriguing history surrounding it. It was once the executional site of the Southampton plot of 1415 to remove King Henry V from the throne. The Bargate also took heavy fire during World War II but magnificently withstood and still stands tall today. The Bargate is now home to an extensive contemporary art collection.
SeaCity Museum: The SeaCity Museum has several exhibits on display but my personal favorite would have to be there Gateway to the World exhibit, which gives you an inside look at the history and culture of this remarkable city. This exhibit is interactive allowing visitors to learn about the Southampton history through film, audio, and other hands on devices. The Pavilion in the SeaCity Museum has special exhibitions that change periodically. Archaeology, maritime, art, and local collections are on display throughout the museum.
