River cruises are becoming increasingly more environmentally friendly.
All businesses are concerned about the environment and the impact they may have. Eco-friendly cruise ships are the industry’s contribution to providing environmental responsibility.
The greenest cruise lines are not just the ocean liners, but also the river cruise brands that are pushing toward greater sustainability. A green cruise ship does much more than eliminate single-use plastic. Take a look at the conservation efforts Avalon Waterways has undertaken.

Eco-Friendly Cruise Ships
Avalon Waterways and its parent company, Globus Family of Brands, along with corporate cousins Cosmos and Monograms, are striving to develop greater sustainability and major waste reduction.
According to Avalon’s managing director, Pam Hoffee, the cruise line has reduced paper waste by 80% in just two years. One-way paper use is reduced is by requesting their guests to choose e-documents instead of printed ones.
Avalon Waterways has chosen to be one of the greenest cruise lines by favoring electronic media. The new AvalonGo app makes it simple for guests to locate services, find maps, look up ship activities, and onshore excursions. For off-ship use, e-brochures are promoted over printed ones. Additionally, Avalon’s Suite ships follow a number of eco-friendly policies which include using LED light bulbs. These energy-efficient light bulbs use 90% less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs.
The ship’s high-tech propulsion system uses 20% less fuel than the standard one. Low-flow toilets along with tap-flow restrictors have reduced water consumption. A multifaceted waste processing method returns clean water to the river. Avalon is building an exceptional reputation when it comes to protecting the rivers they sail. They have replaced plastic straws and lids for to-go cups with a 100% biodegradable alternative.
Guests are supplied with washable fabric laundry bags, water bottles that can be refilled, and shipboard water stations for filling them. The Globus Family of Brands is committed to donating money to The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit dedicated to ridding international oceans of plastic. Their goal is to clean 50% of the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” in 50 years.
