If you’re a smoker, you might not be so thrilled with the recent changes in the smoking policies of many of the cruise lines. More and more cruise lines are prohibiting smoking on cabin balconies. However, if you’re a non-smoker, this is good news. You will now be able to enjoy the fresh ocean air from your cabin and balcony without the worry of a neighboring smoker.
If you enjoy your smoke, don’t be discouraged. Holland America, Norwegian, Carnival and Windstar still allow you to enjoy your cigarette from your balcony.
We’ve put together a summary of the cruise line’s smoking policies—new and existing–for your reference. And remember that the policy can change again at any time.
Azamara Club Cruises–Smoking is only permitted in the port side aft section of the Looking Glass Lounge and the starboard forward section of the pool deck. Everywhere else, cabins included, are non-smoking.
Carnival Cruise Line–Smoking is allowed in the dance clubs, casino, and jazz clubs. However smoking is prohibited in other public places like the dining room. All cabins are non-smoking except smoking is permitted on the balcony until October 9, 2014 when the ban on smoking on the balconies takes place. The new spa cabins are already entirely smoke-free including the balcony.
Celebrity Cruises–Smoking is prohibited in cabins and on balconies. It is also prohibited in all public areas including the casino and bars. On some ships they have designated indoor smoking areas and outdoor smoking is allowed on on all ships on the port side of the pool deck and outside the bar.
Cunard Line–As of April 28, 2014, smoking on cabin balconies will no longer be allowed. Smoking will be allowed in designated areas on the open decks and designated bars and lounges.
Disney Cruises–As of Nov 15, 2013, smoking on cabin balconies will no longer be allowed. Smoking is allowed on the starboard side of all open decks except near Mickey’s pool.
Holland America Line–Smoking is still permitted on cabin balconies and on open decks in designated areas in most public spaces, except restaurants and show lounges.
Norwegian Cruise Line–Smoking is still permitted on cabin balconies except for cigar and pipe smoking. All public spaces are smoke-free except for the casino and cigar bar. There are also designated smoking areas on open decks.
Oceania Cruises–This cruise line is entirely smoke free except for two outdoor designated smoking areas.
Princess Cruises–Smoking is permitted in the cigar lounge, designated areas in the disco, casino and open decks. No smoking is allowed in the cabins or balconies.
Royal Caribbean–As of January 1, 2014, smoking is no longer allowed in staterooms and on balconies. Designated smoking areas are on the starboard side of open decks as well as in the casino, the Connoisseur Club on Freedom and Voyager class ships. Otherwise, all indoor areas will now be smoke-free.
Seabourn Cruise Line–As of February 2, 2014, most ships will be smoke-free. Each ship has its own exceptions, so read the Seabourn Smoking Policy to find a ship that best suits your preference.
Silversea Cruises–As of January 1, 2013, smoking in cabins is no longer allowed. Smoking will be allowed in the Connoisseur’s Corner, the cigar and cognac bar and designated smoking areas open decks.
Windstar Cruises–Smoking is allowed everywhere except in restaurants. So if you’re a smoker, this is the cruise line with the least amount of restrictions.
Don’t Break the Smoking Policy Rules
The fine for smoking in your cabin is huge. Some cruise lines charge $250, and others like Seabourn, charge $250 per day. Some penalties are extreme, such as being removed from the ship without a refund.
